Illegal wildlife trade is the second largest threat to endangered species, only second to habitat loss. Unfortunately, the internet has become a primary channel to facilitate this trade and the numbers for ASEAN countries are alarming. Across the web, wildlife traffickers exploit online companies for illicit activities, violating company policies, creating major security risks for online users, and jeopardising a company’s integrity and reputation.

Shutting down global online illegal wildlife trade requires an integrated, international solution. WWF, TRAFFIC and IFAW are collaborating with companies across continents to unite the industry and maximize impact for reducing wildlife trafficking online. The Coalition to End Wildlife Trafficking Online is a global consortium of 36 tech companies including Facebook, Google, Microsoft, eBay, Alibaba, and Tencent, working together to stop illegal wildlife trade through web-based platforms.

WWF, Google and the Coalition will be convening a virtual, closed-door working session on October 20, 2020, 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM Singapore Standard Time, bringing together SEA-based social media and e-commerce companies to learn more about the risks of wildlife trafficking to the tech sector, and what it means to be a Coalition company member. The session includes guest speakers from Coalition members such as Facebook, eBay and others demonstrating their progress in this space, a showcase of resources available to Coalition members, as well as interactive breakout sessions to share learning and encourage collaboration.
