Microsoft Signs One of the Largest-Ever Permanent Carbon Removal Deals

Microsoft has entered into a multi-year agreement with Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology firm Heirloom for the removal of up to 315,000 metric tons of CO2, making it one of the largest carbon removal deals to date. DAC technology directly extracts CO2 from the atmosphere, with the potential to contribute significantly to global carbon removal goals. Heirloom, along with partners Battelle and Climeworks, is developing Project Cypress, a DAC hub in Louisiana expected to capture over 1 million metric tons of CO2 annually for underground storage. This partnership forms part of Microsoft's efforts to achieve carbon negativity by 2030 and remove all historical emissions by 2050, following similar agreements with other carbon removal companies.
