First Bamboo Structured Telecommunication Tower to Be Built by End of 2019 in Malaysia

Telecommunications services company Edotco Group Sdn Bhd is planning to install its first bamboo structured telecommunication tower in Malaysia by the end of 2019. According to the group, the renewable resource is equally sturdy and as environmentally friendly as traditional steel towers. Since its first inception in 2017, the alternative material has managed to reduce 70 percent of the carbon emission per site and presently, 15 bamboo structures have been deployed by Edoto Group. Studies reveal untreated bamboo can bear the weight of concrete, making it an ideal material for telecom structures. It can withstand gusts of wind of up to 210km/h, and has an expected lifespan of approximately 10 years with proper maintenance. A bamboo tower takes around 12 days to construct, consumes less energy than standard structures and it has a capacity to house up to 8 antennas at a time, enabling co-location. Edotco Group aims to achieve carbon neutral operations by working with the entire ecosystem in mind and ensuring vendors, partners and market players share a common sustainability vision.
