Australia’s carbon credit scheme faced damning criticism in recent research. The study revealed that a world-leading reforestation project meant to convert territories in the Outback dessert into carbon sinks, had been an underperforming “catastrophe.” Across nearly 80% of these plantations, forest growth stagnated or woodlands shrank. Despite this, Australia issued millions of questionable carbon credits, which are used to offset polluting industries.
