EU Adopts Laws to Double Renewable Energy Share, Decarbonize Aviation

The European Council has adopted two key pieces of legislation as part of the EU's "Fit for 55" roadmap to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. One directive aims to nearly double the share of renewable energy consumption in the EU by 2030, with a target of 42.5% of overall energy consumption from renewables. The other law focuses on decarbonizing the aviation sector by accelerating the adoption of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). It sets minimum SAF blends for fuel suppliers at EU airports, requirements for aircraft operators and airports, and the creation of an SAF labeling scheme to inform consumers about environmental performance.
