Hyundai to Build CO2 Storage Platform for South Korea’s Largest CCS Project

Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) of South Korea has signed a preliminary basic design agreement with Hyundai Engineering & Construction (Hyundai E&C) for a subsea underground carbon dioxide (CO2) storage platform. The project aims to revitalize the Donghae gas field, which ceased production in 2021, and transform it into South Korea's largest carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility. The project, led by the Korea National Oil Corporation (KNOC) and Hyundai E&C, seeks to capture and store 1.2 million tons of CO2 emissions from domestic industrial complexes. HHI will design the offshore platform, and KSOE will develop the CO2 injection system. This initiative aligns with Hyundai's strategy to leverage its offshore construction expertise to expedite the development of innovative systems.
