Indonesia is finalizing a regulation that will expand the scope of carbon capture and storage (CCS) and carbon capture, storage, and utilization (CCUS) to include industries beyond oil and gas. The new regulation aims to make it possible for cross-border carbon storage, allowing carbon from abroad to be stored in the country. Industries like cement and metal will be permitted to store their emitted carbon in CCS and CCUS facilities. Indonesia has substantial storage capacity for carbon in depleted reservoirs and saline aquifers. Currently, there are 15 CCS and CCUS projects in various stages of preparation, with a combined investment of nearly $8 billion, including BP's Tangguh CCUS project.
