Indonesian, Australian Firms Team Up on Zero-Emission Steel

Indonesian steelmaker PT Gunung Raja Paksi Tbk (GRP), a member of Gunung Steel Group, is planning to reduce carbon emissions from the steel industry by replacing natural gas with green hydrogen produced on-site using Australian technology. The Indonesian and Australian governments are supporting this initiative, with a feasibility study being conducted through the Katalis business development program. If successful, GRP could replace natural gas at its plant in West Java with green hydrogen from Australian company Fortescue. The study aims to be completed by December 2023 and aligns with GRP's goal to achieve full operational carbon emission reduction by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2050. The steel industry is energy-intensive, and this initiative could significantly contribute to decarbonization in the sector.
