Indonesia Launches Biggest Floating Solar Power Plant in Southeast Asia

Indonesian President Joko Widodo has inaugurated the Cirata floating solar power plant (PLTS), boasting a capacity of 192 megawatt-peak (MWp) in Purwakarta, West Java. This facility is the largest floating solar power plant in Southeast Asia and the third-largest globally. The project is a collaboration between the State-Owned Enterprises Ministry, Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, state-owned electricity company PT PLN, and the United Arab Emirates company Masdar. The Cirata floating PLTS supplements the electricity production capacity of the hydroelectric power plant (PLTA) in the region, which has already reached 1,000 MW. President Widodo emphasized the importance of connecting renewable energy sources to economic centers via transmission lines to overcome challenges related to their distance from electricity demand centers.
