Malaysia Seeks Clean Energy Transition Deal With Rich, Developed Nations

Malaysia has been in talks with developed countries such as the United States, the European Union and Japan, to explore new prospects for financing deals that will help the nation transition away from polluting coal power, said Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Malaysia’s minister of natural resources, environment and climate change. Malaysia, which relies on coal and natural gas for 75 percent of its power needs, is trailing its Southeast Asian neighbours on clean energy expansion. Climate experts believe its new government should follow in the footsteps of its neighbours Indonesia and Vietnam to tap more global green funding for the cutting of emissions.
