Deputy director of the National Antarctic Research Centre (NARC) Dr Wan Mohd Rauhan Wan Hussin said that Antarctica ice melt caused by global warming will lead to extreme weather disasters in Malaysia. He said the Antarctica continent has important clues to the complex processes of the planet and plays an important role in the earth’s climate system, and that the Southern Ocean which surrounds Antarctica absorbs about 30 per cent of human-generated carbon emissions. He commended the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) and the Sultan Mizan Antarctica Research Foundation (YPASM) for funding RM8 million in grants to support Malaysia’s contribution to international climate research in Antarctica.
