New Gas Fields in Southeast Asia Threaten 1.5° Celsius Target

Despite the scientific consensus to limit global temperature increases below 1.5°C by not permitting new oil and gas exploration, at least 19 new gas fields across Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Brunei have been sanctioned or are expected to be sanctioned by 2025. Global Energy Monitor highlights these developments, encompassing fields with over 540 billion cubic meters of estimated gas reserves. Over 75% of these fields are situated in Malaysia and Vietnam. These new developments conflict with efforts to mitigate climate change and could exacerbate the gap between current trajectories and a sustainable development pathway.
