Irresponsible parties have been dumping solid waste, including industrial waste, along river bunds in Southern Seberang Perai for at least a few years without action being taken against them, according to environmental NGO Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM). SAM’s president, SM Mohamed Idris, has called on the authorities to immediately take action to stop the pollution by irresponsible parties. A statement by the NGO tells, “the dumping of domestic, construction and industrial waste in these areas, especially along the hidden bund roads, have become a trend for some parties as an easier alternative to cut waste management costs.” According to the NGO’s statement, the fishermen community and public who use the roads have also raised concerns about these sites being used as illegal dumping grounds. SAM has called on authorities, particularly Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP) and the Department of Environment (DOE), to take more stern action against polluters by conducting regular checks to stop further illegal dumping at the sites.
