Sarawak Can Play Crucial Role in Southeast Asia’s Energy Transition: Premier

Sarawak, Malaysia’s largest state by area and its largest provider of renewable energy, can be an important player in accelerating the energy transition in Southeast Asia through collaborating and sharing resources with its neighbours. Sarawak premier Tan Sri Abang Johari, speaking at an energy summit held in Singapore, said that Sarawak has the lowest average unsubsidised tariffs in the region and that its domestic, industrial and export customers have benefited from being supplied by affordable and clean electricity through the state’s renewable hydropower. He said the state’s power generation mix has transitioned from 92 per cent fossil fuels in 2010 to 70 per cent in 2015 and that the shift has decarbonised its grid emissions intensity by 72 per cent between 2010 and 2020.
