TNB Expanding With Two New Clean Energy Projects

Malaysian electricity company Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) recently announced two new power plant projects in line with its aspirations to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. Its wholly owned subsidiary TNB Power Generation Sdn Bhd obtained approval from the Energy Commission to implement a clean energy programme to repower the Sungai Perak Hydroelectric Power Plants Scheme, while it sets up a greenfield 2,100 megawatt (MW) combined cycle gas-fired power plant in Kapar, Selangor. According to research house Kenanga Research, the expansion will help to improve TNB’s environmental, social and governance (ESG) rating, particularly as the existing asset at Kapar, with its triple fuel (coal, gas and oil) firing capability, is rife with technical issues, and is in need of replacement.
